light show of sorts

HEY! HEY! HEY! I have moved off of my AUTO setting and started to venture into a world of making it work for me... It's learn as I shoot time. I will really have to pay attention to get efficient at this. (Thank you Brandi for getting me started).
So, I shot tons of things this week. I worked a little on setting some shots up, but in the end something spontaneous won the blog spot.
We were enjoying an evening with family up at our family farm. It was a beautiful evening for a fire. I noticed as My brother-in-law threw logs on the fire the sparks were nicely rising straight up and not blowing towards anyone enjoying the fire. The only staging needed was having my brother-in-law "make the fire angry". He didn't mind stirring things up & like a happy caveman, he made me a firestorm. Thanks to him, I played with settings until I got this.
I could see this blown up huge and hung as mural piece in an edgy contemporary city dwelling.

Below is a quick oops I made before adjusting things on my camera. I could see how even our mistakes can eventually become artistic pieces we can make work for us. I was upset I missed this shot. However; now I see what happens when our setting are too open for our light source.
This was after saturating the photo in shop to see if there was anything in the almost white photo and here she is... It will take work and practice to get a balanced usable shot but it's a fun start.
She was holding a sweet yellow ducking on a beautiful day.

  1. Jay'me, I'm so proud of you!!!! Yeah for manual and heck yeah for a awesome shot! Great job!!!!
You turned up the ISO, slowed down the shutter speed, and opened your aperture to get to that "sweet spot". FANTASTIC!!
The pic of M is really neat. I've never taken a blown photo and upped the saturation before. I'm going to have to try it.
    Great Job!!!!

  2. Brandi, I wonder if you monkeyed around with the saturation of the shot of Kate and Ry if it would work...maybe in b/w? Just giving you something to work on ;) hehe

  3. I looked at the fire photo for a few moments trying to figure out what I was looking at and finally gave up. Way to keep us guessing! Very cool shot!! The pic of M is super neat also.

  4. Nice work Jay'me - especially on using full manual mode! That's outstanding. And you got a really interesting shot. You won't believe the freedom manual mode gives you. It's going to be fun following this one up!

  5. Awesome Jay'me on using full manual! It can be quite fun once you stopped being scared to do it :0). I know the feeling, I still get scared using full manual so I usually do Aperture Priority. Nice Shot!

  6. I just hopped on to look around the site. Does anyone else see at first glance a woman running from left to right in the rising sparks? I saw arms, thighs, head, and hair just jumping out at me. NO, I'm not drinking. I also now think the washed out photo looks like one of those old silver screening plates.
Thank you all for your comments, This was a fun post.

  7. @ Alli - good thinking on the pic of Ry and KT but that photo is underexposed and this photos is overexposed. I've tried 7 ways to Sunday to "fix" that photo and haven't been successful. If someone reading this wants to take a stab at lightening a very dark photo email us (email on the right side of the screen) I'm happy to have someone else look at it.
@Jay'me - I see no woman dancing. But I so completely love the way you see things. I'm in awe of the way you look at things. You inspire me.

  8. Send that pic of them to me. I'll try, Sounds like Its worth at least try on a Mac... Probably same results here.
That woman IS dancing in the fire! If crazy inspires you, prepare yourself girl, there's a whole lot more where that came from.
    Love ya,
