Wordless Wednesday with Scott

The poster (that's me) will post a picture and its settings. No other verbiage is allowed. The commenter's (that's you) will guess in the comments section below how my picture associates with yesterdays (Tuesday's) picture. It can be a setting. It can be a play on words. It can be a theme. In every photo there are numerous ties, thus creating no right or wrong answer. Just make a comment below and you will be entered into our drawing to be our next guest photographer.

What if I am not good enough to be a guest photographer?
You are good enough. We love all kinds of photographers! That's what makes this so much fun. We believe that everybody has a unique view of this world and we want to see it through the lens of your camera. Any camera goes, camera phone, point and shoot, film camera that has its photos turned into jpgs., high end professional grade cameras, any and all of them! So make a guess and have some fun!
How does this all work?

The contest will go on until my (Scott's) next post. I will use random.org to choose the winner and post the story behind my picture and what the connection is, along with my photo for that day. All you have to do, as our chosen winner, is email us your picture before 10pm on your post day. Usually on a Sunday, but we are flexible. The photo has to be yours, has to tie into the picture from the day before, and 3C1D has to be authorized to use it. Just remember to keep checking back with us to make sure you get the post about who has won.

Only one guess per person. Have fun!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Everyone looks at everything different. As you all know, I LOVE a good piece of metal. Give me something dirty, rusty, gross and I'm in love. The depth of the imperfections astounds me and I find myself drawn in.
Yesterday Sara captured something classically beautiful. Who doesn't love a beautiful blond haired little girl? Everyone (myself included) is drawn to pictures of beautiful things. But, as my daughter reminded me this morning the things we usually find "ugly" or "offensive" can be beautiful as well.
Our lawn hadn't been mowed yet this season and when my almost four year old opened her blinds this morning she squealed with delight.
"Mommy look at all those beautiful flowers. This whole place is filled with them."

Nikon D300s with Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 @66mm
natural light
ISO 200
Aperture f/2.8
Shutter speed 1/2000sec

I don't think a yard filled with dandelions is classically beautiful like Sara's daughter but I do think the flowers serves as an ample tie-in.

WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER
Before I announce this weeks winner of Wordless Wednesday (or Talkless Thursday as the case may be) I should share the tie in and the story behind the photo... it's my job.
My tie in was "sleeping like a log". Except my girl wasn't sleeping. She was pretending to sleep Easter morning so I could take a picture of her amidst her "mouse" friends.
The winner this week is... Sharon. Great guess Sharon. You were correct (not that that matters). Contact us at 3chicks1dudephoto@gmail.com and we'll make the necessary arrangements.

Find the beauty around you.
xoxo,
Brandi

Surprise!

We've got a guest photographer today. I want everyone to meet Sara. She was the winner of Scott's wordless Wednesday.
Everyone give Sara a warm 3C1D welcome.

A little from Sara in her words...

I didn't get quite what I was hoping for but one decent shot of the bunch will do, especially when the model grows weary of being the subject of meticulous instructions ("Smell the flower, honey!") and apparently doesn't want to get her knees dirty in the dirt (after picking up trash and planting in the woods at school all afternoon). If it looks to you like my daughter is rolling her eyes at me, I think you might be right. The tie-in is the flower. It's red of course. You can't see it but there are yellow tulips right beside it. Of course, the red is her favorite so I went with it. But she is wearing yellow so the color ties in, too.
The project definitely bred discontent with my current camera. I used a point and shoot, the Canon Powershot (and not even a new one) with a trigger that's retrofitted with a paperclip. I'm hoping a new camera is in my near future. We'll see! Thanks for letting me play today! Sara

Boy we can relate to the unwilling model and the working by sheer will camera. Thanks so much for playing with us Sara. We hope you can join us again soon.
Go on over to Sara's blog and check her out.

Want to play with us too. We promise it's easy. Go here and make a comment. Doesn't need to be anything fancy. Just say pick me and maybe I'll pick you. Tomorrow night the winner will be announced.

xoxo,
Brandi

Talkless Thursday

Wordless Wednesday got skipped yesterday. Which is fine that left me with Talkless Thursday (thanks Sere for the phrase). It's been a long day around these parts so not having to share works for me right now.
You know the drill.

Sure it Feels Like Spring!

So I saw Mamalu's guest post and I immediately thought how easy it would be to follow, owing to my penchant for photographing flowers. Piece of cake! But the more I thought about it, the more I thought I should try to do something else. So of course I dipped into the archives for this shot:

Canon 30D
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L at 51.0mm
Aperture f/2.8
Shutter 1/500
ISO 100
Natural Light

This unequivocally a photo from last autumn. My connection is that although it's "supposed" to be spring, it feels more like fall. Weak, I know. But I've got about 137 things to do before bedtime tonight and, well, I suck, and this drew the short straw. All the same, I love this photo. It's Ethan looking quite sweet and vulnerable. I did the conversion using Digital Photo Professional and I probably should have used PSE. Maybe I'll give that a try later.

Moving on, I have a little business to tend. My latest WW post was indeed connected by water. I happen to race sailboats (no I don't own it) and I've been dying to somehow work that into photography. It's not easy when you're racing! Anyway, this photo gave me a chance to try out light painting. I set-up the scene in a completely dark room (my basement) and then set the exposure to 10 seconds. While the shutter was open, I illuminated the scene piece by piece using a hand held flash light. It was a ton of fun. You can choose what to spot light just by spend more time with the flashlight on said item. Give it a try!

As for the winning guess, I could say I used random.org, but the truth is that I'm choosing Sara, only because she's never graced these pages. I know Sara - she's a good friend. And we love us some Amanda and Mamalu. But I thought we'd give Sara a shot (pun absolutely intended!). Sara, email us at 3chicks1dudephoto@gmail.com and we'll work it out! Hope you're all having a great week!

Happy Easter Everyone

I hope you've had a wonderful, indulgent Easter spent with family and friends.

We've got one of our great 3C1D friends with us tonight. I'm sure you all remember MamaLu.
Here's what she's got to say today.

Here's my shot for today. The leaves pick up the green from the grass in Saturday's picture with Scott and Justin. Since today is Easter, and as it's (supposedly) spring, I wanted to depict renewal and rebirth. The daffodils are easy to tie in with that theme. With humans, one type of renewal and rebirth is based on emotions triggered by memories that never die, but lie dormant until a word, a photo, a song, a scent - something - triggers them. These are precious gifts, as are the flowers in spring. Enjoy.
Mamalu

Bring on the spring! From all of us, to all of you, Happy Easter.

Our Bestie Amanda

Tonight we have Amanda. She was the guesser chosen from the last WW challenge. We've become friends with Amanda, mainly because she's stuck by us for a long time. It's the best thing about a blog really - meeting new people with similar interests. If you get a chance check out her blog here. She has some fantastic photos and you won't regret it. Here's her latest in her words:

My tie in is flowers. I grew up in San Diego where we don't get
seasons per se, we had summer and spring and maybe a touch of fall.
But the spring was so fast and you hardly noticed it since so many
plants were year round there. When I moved to Oregon I was astounded
at the spring they have up here! IN LOVE more like. You have time to
enjoy God's creations. This was the first year I have been able to
capture it with any success if I may claim that. I haven't edited
this photo. I really like how bright it is. If I do edit it I may
tone the exposure down just a tad so you can see more of the pink of
the flowers. Thanks for letting me share... again! :-)

I'll only add that it's nice knowing at least one other photog out there uses Canon. Amanda, this is becoming WAY too Nikon heavy now that Jay'me defected. See if you can drum up more Canonites for me! As always, thanks for posting!

Our Latest WW Winner Amanda!

Tonight we are blessed with one of our best followers Amanda. Take it away Amanda:

I have been reflecting recently on how I edit and "my style" in
photography. I have been noticing darker, more dramatic lighting and
feel. Like with my last guest spot here as a good example. I just
thought that was a pretty interesting side note. Onto the photo. As
I was thinking of how I would link to Brandi's photo, I was thinking
about going with the blue, but I saw this photo on my CF card and knew
it would be what I share. The connection is toys. You wouldn't think
of this castle being a toy, but I would spend hours either using the
castles in my imagination play, or trying to physically play with
them. So now you have a piece of my past to look at. Sorry it's not
a beautiful landscape of San Diego, but I hope to share those on my
blog soon! Thanks again!

Thanks as always for joining us Amanda. Have a great time in San Diego! And to all you readers, check out Amanda's blogs here and here. Thank you and good night!

I can't ever just have a regular Wordless Wednesday. It's just not how it works out. I've always got something to say. Just ask my husband.
The announce from last weeks Wordless got forgotten. So, I'll take care of that now.

Is it coming?

Our latest Wordless Wednesday winner is here tonight. Welcome back to MamaLu.

She's been here before and needs no introduction.

Her thoughts in her words...

That startlingly aqua vehicle got me to thinking... And I thought too hard, and was torn between two shots...

We know that winter is NOT done yet! But we in Chicago (in Illinois, the Midwest) know the premise of spring in color and light amidst our monochromatic winter world.

This is Sox Park (US Cellular Field) just before sunset with its beautiful rosy-golden tones, taken from the city works building just west of the park.

This is the Chicago skyline from the Museum campus by Adler Planetarium taken just after sunset...

When the wind is less gusty I'm going to head back and retake these shots with tripod and with attention to depth of field.

I for one am beyond ready to start seeing signs of spring. This photo gives me hope.

Thanks for joining us Mamalu. Hope to see you again soon.

xoxo,
Brandi

Glow and a WW winner announce

Here's a little video to go with my post today.

It fits today's post.

BigDan's picture made me think two things.
1) I want a hot dog.
2) The building glowed. A soft beckoning calling to me.

Well, I got a hot dog for dinner and I decided to post this.

Nikon D300 what?
I don't remember which lens I had on it at this point, I had too many to choose from.
ISO 500
Shutter speed 1/10sec
Aperture f/2.8 swoon

Scott's father has a wonderful Nikon D300 that he let me borrow for a few days so I could put it to the test and make a decision on my new camera choice. Mr. L is a wonderful, wonderful man, that I canNOT thank enough. He loaned me his entire camera bag, lenses, speed light, camera, extension tubes, and a very well loved manual. It was pure camera heaven on earth. I didn't get enough time to play with all of it but I got enough time to know that the D300 will be my next camera.

This glowing orb is a ball that belongs to my daughter. It's a super bouncy ball that has glitter inside and changes colors. Once again I headed to my dark but large master bedroom closet, shut the door and snapped away.
I took these photos last week, just to see how the camera handled in these conditions. But when I saw Dan's photo, that soft warm glow struck me and I thought it would be a good time to share this.

In other news the Wordless Wednesday winner for this week is mamalu. Mamalou was right, my connection was in the white. We had just gotten 19'' of snow and there was nothing but white. Pure white everywhere. This particular snow drift was about waist high on my 5'7'' frame. I just loved the texture of the snow. I'm not entirely happy with how I captured. Next time I'm going to try getting a little lower a little closer to eye level.

Well kids, Sere is up tomorrow.
I'm sure she's going to GLOW.

xoxo,
Brandi

Sweet Dreams - welcome back Amanda

Evening all! A special night here. Our good friend Amanda is back as a guest. You might remember her previous visits This or this. We love some Amanda. She's a tried and true e-friend to 3C1D.

Before I have her wow you yet again. I need to announce the winner for last weeks slightly different Wordless Wednesday.

Big Dan, you the lucky man, random.org says so. Well, first it said Scott was but I made it try again. :)
My thought in the tie in was love. Sere's hearts and Jay'me doing her labor of love. It was weak but I threw the post together in 5 minutes. Cut me some slack.

Now that that is out of the way. I'll allow you to enjoy what Amanda has to offer. You'll notice she has a new camera and she's really rocking it.

Hold your breath....

I have always wondered what he dreams about. I watch him sleep and
wonder. It's pretty crazy to think he is almost 1 year old. I read
Seres' post and immediately thought of M sleeping. I thought I would
share my favorite thing to do. I have MILLIONS of pictures of him
sleeping, but this one might be my favorite. I love the lighting
though the focus could be better. Hope you enjoy looking at M as much
as I do and thanks again for sharing guys!

Oh my! I want to lose my senses and have another baby. So sweet, so innocent, so perfect.
Go check out Amanda's work on her blog

See you soon!

For Jay'me

Another non-typical Wordless Wednesday. Jay'me's beautiful daughter Maddie had a routine surgery today and Jay'me is down for the count. I (Brandi) am happy to step in for her. This is photo I took of Jay'me on Monday doing what she does.

A photo of Jay'me for Jay'me. It's just how I roll.

Little different contest today.
Take a moment to wish Maddie well in the comments below and be entered in this weeks guest photographer race. For extra bonus points (which get you nothing but my adoration) guess what I was thinking ties Sere's photo yesterday with my photo for today.

Pack me up

Brandi here. I cannot tell you how excited I am to share this photo with you all. RJ is our latest winner from last weeks Wordless Wednesday. As usual, this weeks Talkless Thursday (same thing as Wordless Wednesday but a day late because I suck) is still up for last minute entries. Go put your name in the comments section and join us like RJ has.

RJ, the lucky dog, is joining us from Hawaii. Usually an Illinois resident, he's in Hawaii for a little rest and relaxation. I'm not sure what the weather is like there but I can tell you it sure beats the sure cold weather in Illinois and most of the continental United States.

Here's what the sunned, RJ has to say.

Rj here, happy as can be since I'm sitting in the middle of Waikiki. Ahhh...sunshine, blue waters and Mai Tai's of course.

Well I would like to express my gratitude to 3C1D as they inspired me to start up my own blog (http://all5hz.blogspot.com ). Well done and keep all those great pictures coming.

I'm currently using a Canon Eos Rebel Xti. It was given to me as a gift so I figured I'd better learn how to use it. I've got a long way to go but I'm really enjoying getting out and taking pictures of the world that surrounds me.

So how do I tie in to Scott's wonderful picture of Brandon. Well loosely....very loosely!

Let's see, I used "natural light", it was "converted" by use of my HDR program (Photomatrix)

And to play off the Rrrrr....Matey theme, there are ancient stories of how Shaolin Buddhist monks were called upon to battle Japanese pirates raiding the coastline.

So my picture is of the Byodo In Buddhist Temple on the Windward side of Oahu. It's just a beautiful place that is surrounded by ponds with Koi fish and Black Swans. It also sits at the foot of the Ko'olau mountains. I took 3 pictures at different exposures. Then ran them through the HDR program. You can play with the lighting to your liking. I hope you enjoy it and if you get a chance to get out of the freezing Midwest I highly recommend Hawaii.

Mahalo!

Stunning! Absolutely stunning. If you all would like to donate some money to send me to Hawaii, I would be eternally grateful. Sere and I were on the Big Island a few years back for Sere's wedding. I have spent much time since then wishing I could return. This photo only makes it worse.

Go over to RJ's blog and check out his other photos, they are pretty awesome as well.

Aloha!

Talkless Thursday with Sere

No 3C1D is not starting something new, I just had to come up with some catchy title. Due to some confusion, mostly on my part, I did not post yesterday. So here I am posting on Thursday, but the same rules apply as they do for Wordless Wednesday.

The poster (that's me) will post a picture and its settings, no other verbiage is allowed. The commenter's (that's you) will guess in the comments section below how my pictures associates with yesterday's (Tuesday's) picture. It can be a setting. It can be a play on words. It can be a theme. In every photograph there are numerious ties, thus creating no right or wrong answers. Just make your comment below and you will be entered into our drawing to be our next guest photographer.

What if I am not good enough to be a guest photographer?
You are good enough! We love all kinds of photographers! That's what makes this so much fun. We believe that every person has their own unique view of this world and we want to see it through the lens of your camera. Any camera goes, camera phone, point and shoot, film camera that has its pictures turned into jpgs, high end professional cameras, any and all of them! So make a guess and have some fun!

How does it all work?
The contest will go on until my (Sere's) next post. I will use random.org to choose the winner and post the story behind the picture and what my connection is, along with my photo for that day. All you have to do, as our chosen winner, is email 3chicks1dudephoto@gmail.com your photo before 10pm on your post day. Usually on a Sunday, but we are flexible. The photo has to be yours, has to tie into the photo from the day before, and 3C1D has to be authorized to use it. Just remember to keep checking back with us to make sure you get the post about who has won (and to keep seeing some neat photographs).

Only one guess per person. Have fun!!!
