Friday Feet?

Did you know that when your ? key is stuck you will find yourself asking more questions in a day than you have the entire last week? True story trust me.

I have a confession. I spaced that it was my day today. I will admit I knew it earlier in the week and was looking forward to challenging myself but in the end, I found myself distracted by the other things in my life and the awful rain and didn't quite get things done. My apologies to my team mates.

I have some pictures of my parents new kittens and I could use those but all of them are a little... well.. flat. So no face today. Today you get feet.

Nikon D300s
Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 *did you know the / key and the ? key are the same sucks when yours is broken*
ISO 800
Shutter Speed 1/640sec (should have turned down the ISO dang changing light conditions)
Aperture f/2.8

As you know, I "work" in the construction industry. These are Dave's feet as he cleaned the mud off the first floor deck of one of our job sites. As you also know, I'm a little obsessed with feet. Specifically work boots. And dirt, I'm also obsessed with dirt.
This picture puts that all together. I wanted to catch as much of the debris flying as possible and I wanted to make it appear that Dave was going to "walk" right out of the frame.
I'm pretty happy with how I achieved my objectives. As usual I could have stayed and played longer. All that debris flying was making me a nervous wreck. I was envisioning having to send the camera in for a cleaning already.

I originally thought I had no tie in. But, that's untrue. I actually have three. The squirrel and Dave both have feet. They are both animals. And both of them are working.
Not bad for pulling something out of my rear end.

The weekend is here. May we all be able to get out and take a picture of something that makes us happy.

Brandi

Wordless Wednesday with Sere

We are back at it again today with Wordless Wednesday. Yay!!! So here it goes!
Rules

The poster (that's me) will post a picture and its settings. No other verbiage is allowed. The commenter's (that's you) will guess in the comments section below how my picture associates with yesterdays (Tuesday's) picture. It can be a setting. It can be a play on words. It can be a theme. In every photo there are numerous ties, thus creating no right or wrong answer. Just make a comment below and you will be entered into our drawing to be our next guest photographer.

What if I am not good enough to be a guest photographer?
,div> You are good enough. We love all kinds of photographers! That's what makes this so much fun. We believe that everybody has a unique view of this world and we want to see it through the lens of your camera. Any camera goes, camera phone, point and shoot, film camera that has its photos turned into jpgs., high end professional grade cameras, any and all of them! So make a guess and have some fun!
How does this all work?

The contest will go on until my (Sere's) next post. I will use random.org to choose the winner and post the story behind my picture and what the connection is, along with my photo for that day. All you have to do, as our chosen winner, is email us your picture before 10pm on your post day. Usually on a Sunday, but we are flexible. The photo has to be yours, has to tie into the picture from the day before, and 3C1D has to be authorized to use it. Just remember to keep checking back with us to make sure you get the post about who has won.

Only one guess per person. Have fun!

Ready! Set!! Go!!!

Friday Faces with Sere

This was not the picture that I had planned on posting today. But it was just such a beautiful, sunny day (a tad windy) but beautiful that I decided to head out and play with the kiddos (human and animal). I was looking for bird's nests, instead I had fun taking shots of Nanook, you've seen him before here, and my son playing together. Hope you enjoy it.

Shutter Speed 1/500 sec.

I have no real connection to Amanda's gorgeous shot except for the spring theme. I don't know about anybody else but I am really glad to be able to head outside to take some photographs and not freeze to death. Yay for spring!!!

BTW I am having some issues with spacing, anybody else having any??? Not sure what the deal is because I'm doing the same things I've always done. But my paragraph spacing is WAY big.

Enjoy! Sere

Friday Faces with Sere

Okay so for about 2 seconds here in the midwest we had nice, warm weather. Then it reverted back to this disgusting cold, damp stuff that I hate (as I'm sure almost everybody else does too). So I was forced to go back to the days of warmth and sun for today. Meet Mr.(or it could be Miss) Pelican.

Nikon D90
ISO-200
Aperture F/11
Shutter 1/400 sec.
Natural Lighting

Mr. (or Miss) Pelican was hanging out by the tarpon feeding area where all of the crazy tourists(including my family and I) pay good money to feed these HUGE fish in the ocean. He was trying his hardest to get any fish that the tarpons did not get. I believe he was a little upset with me because I had a camera in his face instead of a fishie and he(she) was letting me know all about his not so happy feelings. I just thought he was kinda cool because he had blue eyes and was quite pretty as far as pelicans go.

Here's hoping that spring and warmer weather gets back here soon. Anybody else feel extra, specially cold after our 70 degree days today? We even started a fire at our house. Brrrr!

Later,
Sere

Sad

Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, chicks and dudes...

It's with great sadness in my heart that I submit this as my last photo for the blog for a little bit.
This blog is a piece of my soul. It's my brain child and all the friends are tied together by Brandi glue. It's not easy for me to leave (and it's not permanent).

For those of you that don't know me and don't follow along on my other blog, my husband is terminally ill. He has a rare genetic disease that has ravaged his body. Things have progressively gotten worse since the beginning of the year and this past week (last Tuesday to be exact) we brought in hospice to help assist me in caring for him in his final days. Taking care of him and our 3year old little girl has to take precedence at the moment.
Rest assured I will be returning when life gets a little less crazy. I just cannot in good faith continue to attempt to post on my day. The photo I have for today is less then stellar (not that that matters around here) and to be honest I didn't give it a single thought that today was my day.
I love all my photo friends and hate not honoring my commitment to the group. I know they all support me in my leave of absence and will continue on without me until I can return.
If there is anyone that would like to take my place for the time being please contact us at 3chicks1dudephoto@gmail.com. I know my friends can handle a 3 day rotation but it's better with 4 the way I intended it.

In saying "see you soon" I offer you slobbery dog kisses from my new friend Sedona.

Nikon D300s - yipppeeee
Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 - swoon @48mm
ISO 3200 - say what?
Shutter speed 1/320
Aperture f/2.8 did you expect anything else?

I am LOVING my new gear. Sadly, I haven't been able to really study it much. This picture could really benefit from some post processing. Brighten things up, sharpen things up and remove the noise. I could have helped some of that noise by turning down my ISO but I just didn't have the mental capacity to make such a correction today.
I'll still be here with photos whenever the time allows and I'll be here all the time with my love and support for my "family". I look forward to my return.

Love you much,
Brandi

Friday Faces with Sere

You all received a double-dose of 3C1D yesterday, you lucky people! So today hopefully we will get back on track, but first some 3C1D business to take care of. Our WW winner from last week is BigDan. Congratulations BigDan who is our local city of Chicago photographer. BigDan if you are okay with it we would love for you to post on Sunday. Please send an email to 3chicks1dudephoto@gmail.com and let us know if that will work.

Now back to my post for the day. I LOVE to photograph animals so our Friday Face for today is a big aquatic cutie! Gotta love dolphins.

Nikon D90
ISO-200
Aperture F/6.3
Shutter 1/800 sec.
18-200mm at 42mm
Natural Lighting

My family and I were able to go and see a dolphin show the other day. My son was able to "wade with the dolphins" for the first time. He thought that was pretty cool. Like mother, like son, I've swam with the dolphins a couple of times in my life.

It actually started to pour down rain while we were there, but we waited it out. The temperature just dropped about twenty degrees, but the shows just kept going on. So this picture was taken after the downpour while the skies were still cloudy. It gave me some nice, natural lighting on the dolphin. I adore dolphins so these shots were a lot of fun for me to take. Exotic animals is my connection to the post from yesterday.

I believe our dude is up for tomorrow to help get us back on schedule.

Gator Bites

Okay so Brandi's post from yesterday was all about new cool toys. My post is going to be all about new experiences. Things that you have not done before or experienced. So enjoy!

Nikon D90

I am all about new experiences in life. In fact I get thoroughly bored if I don't get try new experiences in my life. This was one of those experiences. My family and I had taken an airboat tour through the Everglades and this lovely girl (at least our guide said she was a girl) decided to swim on up to us and check us out. Now folks this was not some gator in a zoo or aquarium, this was a real live wild gator. It was AWESOME!!! The adorable older lady who sat in front of us on the airboat thought she was going to jump right in and join us in the boat. Instead she just kind of hung around checking us out. I literally could have reached out and touched her.

Aftewards we all went out to eat and I tried (for the first time mind you) gator bites. They tasted really good, but I felt kind of bad eating them after seeing this beauty out in the wild.

Enjoy your life experiences!

I {heart} you...

Yeah its another early Valentine's theme from me. Sue me! I don't really even care about Valentine's Day but they have lots of cute stuff to play with. I'm actually a tad bit late (or early) posting this latest picture.

I am trying to get a collection of good, cute puppy pics for this thing I'm doing so I have been practicing as often as I can taking decent puppy shots. In this shot I love the somewhat playful look the pup has. That is what a bouncy ball is to me, something to play with and both play objects are blue.

I'm sure Jay'me will be up later today as well to give you a Wordless Wednesday of fun!

Friday Faces with Sere

Totally thought my day was tomorrow. Glad I hopped on to see everybodies pictures from the last few days and realized that it was my turn today. We had two Snow Days this week, which is fun, although it extends our school year. We were out playing in the snow, sledding, and letting out "Whitey" to run around and play with. "Whitey," the little fluff ball is going to his new home tomorrow. I also had my son practice taking snow pictures as well, gotta get him interested in photography now right? I can't have my family members cutting off heads in photos and he enjoys it as well. What cuties these guys both are, I had to post the picture I took of the two of them.

Playtime

You can practically hear the giddiness in Scott's post yesterday. He's like a big kid playing. All those lights, flashes, playing in water... all fun stuff.
It reminded me of this photo...

Nikon d40 kit lens
ISO 200
shutter speed 1/10

I had to pull from the archives (shame on me), life has gotten the better of me as of late.
It's been so long that I have no idea what in the free world I was thinking with my settings. There are about 30 shots of this circus train and I remember playing around with some settings trying to yet again learn the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO but *scratches head* an aperture of f/20 with a shutter speed of 1/10 in broad daylight. Hmmm....

Hoping all of you are having a calmer start to 2011. I promise our happy chicks and dude will be stripped of their holiday wear soon.

Brandi

Two Turtle Doves....

Okay not sure if these guys are turtle doves but I do believe that they are doves of some sort and there's four instead of two, but hey who cares!! As I have stated before we do not have any snow right now so this picture is an archival picture, but I think that it ties in well with Brandi's picture from yesterday. It was great to be able to catch these guys up in the tree and it was before all the snow and ice had either melted or been disturbed. You know that quiet time after a snow storm where everything is just calm and beautiful. I love that time.

We might actually have a white Christmas, I'm hoping. It sounds like we might even get that snowfall on Christmas Eve which would be even more exciting. That will be so pretty.

Here's hoping that your holiday is calm and peaceful, filled with the love of family and friends.

Red and White Puppy

Hi, Sere here and I have to apologize to everybody. I missed my day completely. I was taking care of an injured puppy and just completely forgot about my post. So needless to say I did not get out yesterday with my camera except to take a quick picture of my puppies. So that is the picture that you get today. Luckily my puppies are considered red and white so it actually fits with Brandi's red bellhopper photo.

No post processing at all. This little guy is my only male and a stinker. He had crawled up the side of the basket he was in and had crashed at the very top of the pile of towels. Now remember his eyes are not open yet, so he did all of this blind. He was looking for mom I'm sure. Enjoy!

I wanna

Hippopotamus for Christmas! In case you're scratching your head and saying "Has Brandi lost her mind again?" here's a video link so you can "be in the know".

This is one of my favorite holiday songs. My three year old sings it fervently from the backseat every time it comes on.
So what does that have to do with this blog? Well, all these holiday photos and guess what I ran into while taking photos of a big Christmas tree in a mall plaza. That's right a hippopotamus.

Nikon D40 kit lens
ISO 400
shutter speed 1/200sec
aperture f/3.5

Nothing crazy or fancy about this photo. Just a good straight shot with zero post processing.

Now for some needed 3C1D business...
Scott misspoke (typed whatever) Myndi was not the winner from the most recent WW. This one here. The winner is about to announced. But first, to go with the new rules a little about my photo from that day and what I was going for in my tie in to this photo of Scott's.

The commenters that said that Bass Pro Shops was a place of worship were thinking the same way as I. In my house, the Bass Pro has served as the Sunday communion on more than one occasion.
Another straight shot, nothing fancy and minimal post processing. This cold weather is really taking it's toll on staged, posed, long photo shoots. One of the tricks I did use was a UV filter on my lens. An absolute must for cold, winter, snowy weather photos. I also made sure I turned properly to get a little back lighting from the sun. Shooting directly into the sun will wash out the sky. I couldn't wash out that beautiful blue sky.

Now to the winner.
Random.org has spoken. Commenter 4 is the lucky winner.
Jen P said...
I am going to guess this is a tribute to your husband Scott--who loves to fish and are those the doors to the Church you got married at in the picture from the day before? going out on a limb there but why not?

Congratulations Jen P. You're the lucky winner. Email us at 3chicks1dudphoto@gmail.com to make the arrangements.

Finally. Sorry we promised you another great photo from Myndi yesterday. Unfortunately life got the best of her and she wasn't able to send us a photo. Give us a shout when life settles down Myndi. We would love to have you back anytime.

Phew. I'm exhausted. That's all for now kiddos.

Later Dudes,
Brandi

Friday Faces with Sere

Better late then never today. My day ran away from me and now here it is almost one in the morning and I am just now putting my picture up. Had a wonderful evening with friends so I hope you all will forgive me.

I am on a total animal kick here lately. My litter of all white siberian huskies are now at around four weeks old and beginning to be at that totally cute stage that puppies get. I couldn't resist taking one of my potential Christmas card pics and using it for my post today. They are just too cute not to :)....

Nikon D2X

I was on a mission today to get some cute, updated pictures of these guys for my website and also to be able to find one that I could send as a Christmas card to my customers this year. I had this idea in my head of what I wanted my picture to look like and I couldn't quite capture what I wanted, came close, but not quite so I will need to try again.

It was kind of dreary out today so natural lighting was hard, i.e. the wide open aperture I had. I could have bumped up my film speed, but you sacrifice some quality doing that so I kept it at 400. A wide open aperture gives you a pretty limited depth of field though. I tried some shots with a flash but the lighting was not right and working with a slow flash is frustrating with active pups so I did away with it pretty quickly. I added a little bit of fill light in Lightroom, but that was about all I did to the shot.

Night, night I am off to bed now.

Bird of Prey

Sorry for my thoroughly boring title here. Between several computer quirks and issues and the fact that I almost forgot that today was my day, I'm just glad to be able to get a photo up. I hope everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I still have guests visiting, which I love, but it makes it hard to stay on top of things. So I have to admit, this photo is from my archives.

Brandi's fabulous photo with the feather made me think of the eagles that come to visit us in droves during the winter season. I live near a dam on the Mississippi River and the river here doesn't freeze like it does elsewhere. For that reason, we are one of the areas where bald eagles come to fish around the dam in the still flowing waters. I have heard that there are some HUGE catfish swimming around that divers have seen. We haven't caught one yet, but my family keeps hoping...

Bald eagles are one of those creatures that make you stop and just reflect on life, freedom, America, flying and a whole host of other things. I try every year to capture some of those reflections with my camera. Sadly it is very difficult for me to do. In this picture I wanted to try and capture the intensity of the gaze that all wildlife predators have. I turned it to black and white for dramatic effect and because the day was grey and icky. I also had to zoom in quite a bit because I don't have my 400mm telephoto lens that I am dying to get! Anybody looking to get rid of one let me know. My wildlife photography dream is still going strong :0).

3 Peas in a Pod

Cannon PowerShot SD790is (Elph)
Duck tape
1/60
f4.9
18,mm
ISO 80

This ties in with the last two posts - Irresistible babies and dogs...

I believe I'm at the desperate stage now. I'm feeling done with the iphone camera and my little broken Elph can't focus up close at all. I have to squeeze the camera to get correct contacts inside to keep it operating. It's actually held together with DUCK TAPE ! It lost it's end on one side and it's poor guts were all visible to the naked eye. I did an emergency tape job. She doesn't quite focus like she used to - but if you baby her, she'll work - sometimes. I have to stand way back then zoom in via photoshop later. It's pretty much the same as my iphone in capability (or lack there of).

Today's post is of our three baby Frenchies (French Bulldogs). They are 13days old, just starting to open their eyes and talking in their crazy wild dreams. How does something that has never even seen daylight have chasing dreams? Their feet are going and they're barking at something. I really want to see what they're chasing or what's chasing them.

I'm going to checkout the new Powershot seeing how awesome Amanda Post was with the glass art. It will step up to the plate while I figure out a solution for a big camera.
I see they are very reasonably priced and are great little, very capable cameras.
Stay tuned,
Jay'me

Nope, I Don't Want to Share

Hello it's Sere here, stepping in for poor Scott. His family had some car troubles on the road to Denver, all is okay, but you get me today instead of him. Hopefully he will be able to show us something beautiful soon. First though some other 3C1D business to attend to.

I have overridden Brandi's executive decision from yesterday, see how all this equality works, all of us are executives around here. Since I am posting today I will be announcing our Wordless Wednesday winner today. Drumroll please for our winner for this week..... Congratulations Rachel, you are the lucky winner! Please email 3chicks1dudephoto@gmail.com for further instructions and let us know a date that works for you. We can't wait to see your photo!

Okay we have some more cuteness going on today so looker beware.

My connections to Brandi's post, besides the cuteness factor was the wood in Nanook's mouth, like the wooden block little Ryan was holding.

This was not the picture I had planned on posting today. I had another one that was probably better technically, but I just thought this was such a fun picture. I guess I could have the connection of playing as well. I wish Nanook had maybe turned his head some my direction so I could have gotten more of his face, but he was more interested in running around. My son had let him out to play. I have no idea where he found the stick, but he was so cute playing with it, that I had to get my camera out to get some shots of it. I was on shutter priority so that I could get the action as much as possible, since huskies as a rule don't sit still for very long.

Have a great day tomorrow and we'll see who ends up being next.

Happy Halloween everybody!! I hope everybody had a fun and safe day today with whatever you did. I actually was a very bad mom and totally missed the whole trick-or-treating thing which was yesterday, instead of today. Ooops, hopefully my son will forgive me. Instead we went to a Harvest Fest where he got all sorts of free candy and had fun playing games.

I debated whether or not to post something more Halloweeny but decided that these beautiful creatures were more interesting and deserving of a post. I had the great pleasure of being able to go to Battle Ground Indiana this past week and was able to get up close and personal at Wolf Park to four pure timber wolves. For me it was a dream come true! I have always, always loved wolves. I used to collect wolf stuff, everywhere I went. I could have had a whole room dedicated to them at one point and to this day, I still every year get a wolf calendar to hang up somewhere in my house. This is a research facility that studies wolf behaviors and does wildlife photography seminars as one way to fund their research. You can also Adopt A Wolf to help them out.

I was able to spend several hours in the enclosure with these guys and one gal and took tons and tons of pictures. In this shot the wolf was jumping, apparently this is something this wolf (Wolfgang) loves to do. I just thought it was great to watch and I tried to get a picture of him at the very top of his leap where he pauses for a second. My connection to Scott's photo is the colored leaves in the background. I could have also done a reflection shot, but I liked this one better. It shows a little more character, and these guys did have some character. Wolfgang happens to be the alpha male of the pack so you had to be a little cautious around him. He did great until they allowed the alpha pack female back in and then he became a bit less relaxed and had to show everybody else in the pack who was the boss. Fascinating to watch and beautiful animals to photograph.

I have more photos of the wolves on flickr if you are interested in seeing them. I could have posted tons more then I did, haha, and driven everybody crazy.

Just Hanging Out...

Just a quick mention and shout out to our Wordless Wednesday winner Kristine!! Congrats you were randomly chosen as the winner! Please email us at 3chicks1dudephoto@gmail.com to find out about where you need to go from here. I can't wait to see your photo!!

As for my photo.... I actually took this picture before I saw Brandi's post from yesterday, bad Sere I know, but I had a good opportunity to play so I took it. I had this grandiose idea in my head of all three of these guys looking up at me all perfect like, you know like a calendar pic where everybody looks so cute and fuzzy. Well needless to say that did not work out at all. Charlie the kitty had his own ideas of what he wanted to do and it was not pose for a picture for me. How dare my local, very friendly, yet total barn cat not want to do what I wanted him to do. Hmmpf, it just doesn't make sense. So I stopped waving the camera in front of his face and went on with my day, trying to figure out how to do Friday Faces and connect it to Brandi's heart post.

Uuuuh duh! With her heart picture I realized that I had to connect it by way of taking a Friday Faces picture of someone that I love, so I went back to my pics from this morning and took a look around. None of them were exceptionally good, but this one does tell a bit of a story and I have realized that I am a story telling photography person. Almost every picture I take has a story of some sort behind it or I don't typically take the picture.

In this picture Colton was trying to make sure that puppy didn't run off because he was scared of Charlie the kitty. Puppy was like, uh why am I here, I don't want to be here, can I please go back to my momma. I know this was what he was thinking because everytime you let go of him where did he race off to? None other then Momma. Charlie the kitty kept following me around wanting attention from me, I kept refusing him and sending him back to Colton. He retaliated by refusing to look at me and my camera, instead he kept snuggling up to Colton and turning his back to me. Like, ha, I know what you want and I am going to pout and not give it to you because you won't pet me. I know for a fact this was what he was thinking, I know it, really I do.

So what story in pictures can you come up with Jay'me?

Monday, October 18, 2010

Grrrr....

When I first saw Myndi's picture my thought was to see if I could find any Halloween decorations and connect it that way. But honestly, I just never made it into town to do that, so I had to look elsewhere. Here is what I found...

Nikon D2x
ISO 320
Lens: my nifty fifty portrait lens, a fixed 50mm lens
Aperture F/8
Shutter 1/80 of a second
Nikon Speedlight SB-400 Flash
Aperture Priority Mode

I went out to take care of the pups, of which I have four cute little stinkers that are still here. I was watching them play with each other and I had my camera out, just to capture it. When I have pups, I have no shortage of adorable things to take pictures of. As they were playing I realized, hey teeth are for chewing and who is in that chewing stage right now? None other then my four cute stinkers, so there came my connection. At first I tried to take shots of them chewing on things but those didn't turn out so well, neither did the chewing on each other. To blurry for the most part and none that had a real good look at their eyes.

Those of you that know anything about wildlife photography, know that the eyes are what normally makes a great wildlife shot. You don't always have a lot of time to mess around with making everything look "just right" when photographing animals so you have to move fast. Most of the time you have a split second to get that adorable look and in this case I was able to catch it. Oh and you can also see his teeth in this shot as well, which is why I posted this shot instead of the other one that I was thinking about.

Jay'me is up tomorrow and I look forward to her post.
